At its height the Inca kingdom stretched from Colombia down through Ecuador, Peru, Chile, Bolivia, and Argentina. In 1535 that all began to change when the Spanish conquistadors arrived in the Inca capital Cusco.
We noticed the altitude today when we were walking up steep Inca steps - only a few steps and we were puffing! We have been as high as 3600m today.
Tomorrow we start walking in earnest - no more bus - we go into the mountains and cross Dead Womans pass tomorrow - that means I (and the other women) can be wrecked and exhausted but John (and the other men) can´t!!!!! That pass is 4200m.

June 29 - Machu Picchu - the cloud eventually lifted to reveal a wonder!
